Report: 20 EFL and English non-league soccer clubs urge blanket betting sponsor ban

‘A ban on gambling logos on shirts would be a significant acceptance of the harm caused, but we would encourage you to include all gambling advertising in stadiums and competition sponsorship so every young fan can go to any football match – home and away – free of inducements to gamble.’

The letter from the clubs, coordinated by the Gambling With Lives campaign group, is the latest effort from betting harm awareness campaigners reportedly fearful the government may be having second thoughts over radical reforms.

Child Q - Safeguarding children in school from disproportionate, harmful intervention

The education secretary, Nadhim Zahawi, has ordered a ordered a review of guidelines and policies around strip searches of children in schools in England following the case of Child Q.

Despite uncertainty about whether the case of Child Q met the criteria for a Local Child Safeguarding Practice Review, one was completed, the report can be found here

The case of child Q brings together a range of complex issues in safeguarding, not least that of parental involvement and partnership working to safeguard children, the adequacy of current procedures, and an examination of the factors that lead to disproportionate intervention where professionals exercise discretion and ‘professional judgement’.

Sexual abuse in residential schools

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) has published a report into child sexual abuse in residential schools in England and Wales based on evidence of incidents at 13 current schools and a further eight schools which are no longer operating. The report finds that: schools responded inadequately to allegations against their staff and in some cases there was a culture which discouraged reporting; and headteachers were unaware of current statutory guidance or did not understand their role in responding to allegations against staff

USWNT to receive US$24m in US Soccer equal pay settlement

The 28 US women’s national team (USWNT) players who filed a gender discrimination lawsuit against US Soccer have reached a settlement with their national governing body, ending a long-running dispute over equal pay and working conditions that dates back to 2016.

Under the terms of the agreement, detailed in a court filing on 22nd February, the players will receive US$22 million in direct compensation from US Soccer, which will put an additional US$2 million towards the players’ post-career goals and charitable endeavours related to the women’s game.
